Weekend | Shigeru Yamazaki | Sokyusha 2023
This book is brand new!
Square 4to, hardcover.
“This photo was taken on a holiday, mainly in the downtown area and downtown area of Tokyo, during Japan's most vibrant period of high economic growth. Ginza became a pedestrian paradise in August 1970, and people of all ages and genders went out to the downtown area on holidays and spent their free time.
Photography is both a record and a copy. People say that times repeat themselves, but I have been searching for everyday scenes in which one can feel the difference between the times, nostalgic for the older generations and new for the younger generations.” - from Shigeru Yamazaki’s afterword
The book is divided in two parts: 1974-1977 and 2015-2020. In the first part, the photos have a nostalgic yet vibrant feel, as if they were from another country. In the most recent photos, although the difference at first glance is not so marked, it shows a more individualistic Tokyo.
